Regularly listed in the top 20 shoots in the UK, Springhead produces some of the most outstanding driven Pheasants (with some Partridges) in the country, but it’s very unusual because whilst many shoots are now producing high birds, at Springhead, the birds are both very high (coming off the top of the South Downs), but also are twisting and curling. As a result they seldom fly straight and therefore present some of the most challenging shooting to be found anywhere, often beating very experienced high bird Guns, because of their unusual and particularly testing flight pattern.
The shoot consists of part of the north facing escarpment of the South Downs between Storrington and Amberley as well as some flatter ground to the north. Most days start with a drive on the lower ground to allow the Guns a chance to get their eye in before moving onto the hill, and some seriously testing birds. Drives such as the Gullies, Kithurst Hill and Targets are truly amongst the best you will find anywhere. Having seen teams fail to reach their anticipated bag with ratios of up to 17 to 1 in the past, the Estate now let’s each day on the basis that the team will fire a minimum number of shots during the day (there is no maximum) and the bag achieved is purely down to the skill of those shooting.
An excellent lunch is always provided in the purpose built shoot Lodge.
Relax in Comfort
Although London is only 1½ hours away, most teams like to stay locally choosing from the Amberley Castle hotel (where you can study the first drive from your bedroom window), Bailifscourt or The Spreadeagle in Midhurst.
