Phoines Estate

Phoines is a traditional mixed Highland sporting Estate covering some 20,000 acres of the Cairngorms National Park, offering guests fantastic opportunities to shoot a range of driven, walked or stalked game. As a result of our management involvement at Phoines, we are delighted to be able to offer the most exclusive and tailormade packages to meet all requirements. The Estate also benefits from having its own accommodation on site in the form of Phoines Lodge; a classic Scottish Lodge set at the foot of the impressive Cairngorm hills, providing the ideal location for teams to relax during their stay. The lodge benefits from a large sitting room and a beautiful dining room, both of which are ideal for entertaining guests during their stay. The closest airport is Inverness, which is approximately one hour’s drive from the Estate and the “sleeper” train can conveniently be taken from London to Kingussie, which is a mere 10 minutes from the Estate. Otherwise car access is excellent with the A9 running nearby.

DRIVEN GROUSE SHOOTING

Phoines is one of Scotland’s premier driven grouse moors, offering some of the most sporting grouse shooting available in the UK. Indeed, the renowned grouse shot, The Duke of Northumberland, believes the grouse on the Corries drives at Phoines are the most challenging to be found anywhere in the world. With the bulk of the grouse drives set within the spectacular Corries, each over 3,000 feet, a day spent shooting grouse in any one of the Estate’s 200 year old grouse butts is as demanding and magnificent a day’s sport as can be had anywhere in the world. Target bags start from 80 brace for a line of 8 or 9 guns and are charged at £170 per brace of grouse.

WALKED-UP GROUSE SHOOTING

Walked up grouse shooting on the Phoines Estate is not only hugely enjoyable, but awesomely challenging; providing guests with a true sporting experience. The day will be shot in the traditional manner with a team of up to six guns walking in a parallel line across the face of the moor, shooting grouse as they rise in front. The line of guns will be accompanied by Estate keepers with working dogs to aid the flushing of the birds. For guests staying in the lodge, a packed lunch will be provided and will be enjoyed in a picnic style halfway through the day on the open hill. If the weather is inclement, one of the Estate’s lunch huts will be used. The target bag for the day is between 10 and 15 brace of grouse (20-30 birds). The charge for the day would be £115 per brace of grouse.

MINI DRIVEN / WALKED-UP SHOOTING

Phoines ability to provide superb rough and walked up low ground shooting is unrivalled, and has been described as possibly the very best low ground mini driven and walked-up shooting the UK has to offer. The estate boasts the most beautiful and varied terrain, providing ideal habitat for a range of species and lending to a diverse range of shooting, all within the stunning Cairngorms National Park. Teams can expect a variety of target species to include; pheasant, partridge, snipe, rabbit, pigeon, and duck.
The days, which are offered from mid-October onwards, can be tailored to suit individual teams requirements, but are generally set at 35-50 head, depending on the teams shooting ability.
The days are structured in a relaxed and informal manner, largely shaped by the client’s requirements. During the day, the guns will walk in a line and shoot game as it rises in front. Guns may also be strategically placed below a cover or thicket while the keepers flush game in a mini-driven style. There will be opportunities for the team to take short breaks during the day at their leisure, with a picnic lunch also being provided. The days are charged at a fixed price of £1,850 per day for a team of up to six guns. If teams wish to shoot more than 35-50 head we would of course be delighted to quote accordingly.
Grouse will not be a target species offered on these days. However, if the opportunity does arise and a grouse flushes, the team is welcome to shoot them within the quoted price.

DUCK FLIGHTING

Duck flighting is available on a number of the Estate’s duck ponds. Duck flights can be included in a day’s sport on the Estate and works particularly well for those guests staying at Phoines Lodge. Duck flights will be priced on request.

PTARMIGAN SHOOTING

The Estate can offer, if stocks allow, the rare opportunity to shoot walked-up Ptarmigan. The anticipated bag of Ptarmigan would be one brace per gun, with a maximum of four guns, priced at £850 per gun.

DEER STALKING

Highland Deer stalking is possible at Phoines Lodge on the hill ground for both Red and Roe deer, with a maximum of two rifles per outing. The Estate offers the most beautiful location to stalk both species of deer. However, as a result of the challenging environments, the trophy quality of the stags and bucks is poor. All deer shot remain the property of the Estate unless by prior agreement. The pricing structure of stalking at Phoines Estate is as follows;
Red Stags – £400 up to eight points, + £30 per point thereafter. Royals £600.
Red Hinds – £200 per outing with a maximum of two hinds per outing.
Roe Bucks – £75 per outing + £100 per buck shot.
Roe Does – £75 per outing with a maximum of two does per outing.
Trophy preparations are charged in addition at a cost of £45 per head paid directly to the keeper. All venison remains the property of the Estate unless agreed otherwise prior to the stalk.

HILL LOCH FISHING

Hill loch fishing is available on two of the Estate’s lochs; one situated a short distance from the lodge and the other found in the hills at the foot of a beautiful Munro. These lochs have a mixture of stocked trout and some impressive wild brown trout, which can reach a reasonable size. Hill loch fishing will be priced on request.

EQUIPMENT HIRE

The Estate is able to arrange the hire or purchase of all the equipment that may be required for your days shooting, including vehicle hire, gun hire, the purchase of cartridges and the provision of loaders/instructors.

ACCOMMODATION

Phoines lodge is a traditional sporting lodge with all the features a shoot party require. The facilities include a large dining room and sitting room with an open fire as well as an onsite Gun room. The lodge has the ability to sleep a total of 19 guests in 10 rooms. The letting of these rooms is on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis, with no drinks (alcohol or otherwise) provided.
