Although London is only 1½ hours away, most teams like to stay locally choosing from the Amberley Castle hotel (where you can study the first drive from your bedroom window), Bailifscourt or The Spreadeagle in Midhurst.
Unfortunately, there is no shooting lodge for the Guns usage at Snilesworth, the majority of Guns stay in the local market town of Helmsley which boasts a selection of very good to luxury accommodation as well as some excellent restaurants.
In addition Snilesworth is spoilt by having close links with numerous private manor houses which can accommodate full teams of Guns and Partners.
Teams of Guns generally stay in one of three excellent establishments; The Black Swan, The Feversham Arms and The Star at Harome. All of which offer excellent service, food and accommodation to shoot parties.
Raeshaw has its own nine bedroom lodge which was renovated by the current owners when the Estate was purchased in the late 1990’s. It has been meticulously maintained ever since and the team of full and part time staff ensure that all guests are extremely well looked after in one of the finest Lodges in Scotland.
All guests are invited to stay in Phoines lodge which can accommodate up to 12 couples in extremely comfortable rooms. The Lodge provides good, traditional Scottish style food and high quality wine.
The Lodge was originally an 18th century Inn situated at the side of General Wade’s road through the North of Scotland. It now sits at the heart of the Estate looking across the valley to the surrounding Mountains, which are truly spectacular.
Lying at the heart of the Estate with great views of the surrounding Moorland, Knarsdale Hall is a large stone-built lodge. Over the last few years the building has undergone major refurbishment and now provides accommodation of a very high standard, in 10 bedrooms, eight of which are served by en-suite bathrooms with showers and two have en-suite shower rooms only.
The Griffin at Fletching has been a firm favourite of ours and previous visiting teams, offering exceptional home cooked fresh food and comfy bedrooms to accommodate full teams. The Griffin situated in a traditional Sussex village, south of the Iford Downs makes an excellent half way stopover between the City and the shoot.
Given that the shoot is within an hour of Central London, most teams go straight there on the morning of the shoot. However, there are a couple of excellent accommodation options nearby; Flitwick Manor and Luton Hoo, hotels are ideal for anyone that wants to stay the night before close by.
There are four properties on the Estate which can be used by guests when shooting. The largest is Redheaugh Lodge, strategically situated at the heart of the Estate. Redheaugh Lodge is of an unusual Victorian design and it was completely rebuilt in 2010 and now provides stunning luxuriously appointed accommodation in nine double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. The Lodge is one of the finest we have come across and makes an ideal base for a party shooting on Glenogil or indeed when shooting on nearby Estates. Additionally there is a two bedroom cottage which can be used for overflow accommodation to the main Lodge.
The Bothy situated nearby and recently refurbished to a very high standard indeed (very unlike any other Bothy we know!), has four twin bedrooms and a large vaulted open plan living area.
The Mochrie is a former farm steading, completely rebuilt in 2009 and providing two separate but adjacent cottages, situated in a stunning location in the heart of the Estate but rather more remote than the other houses. The Mochrie has wonderful views across to open moorland and is ideal for a smaller parties or for those guests truly wanting to be in the middle of nowhere!
All of the properties can be rented on a self-catering basis or fully staffed using the Estate’s chef, butler and housekeeper. Linen, towels and toiletries are included and all properties are fully equipped to a very high standard with crockery, glasses, etc.
Additionally, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and trout fishing is available on the Estate by arrangement.
This impressive country house sits above the picturesque village of Wildboarclough, with breath-taking views of the Peak District National Park.
Built in 1815 and furnished in a traditional country house style, Crag Hall is the private country retreat and shooting lodge of The Earl and Countess of Derby. Until recently this private home was used by only close friends and family but now has become available as by exclusive appointment.
The 12 bedroom property sleeps up to 21 guests and includes the services of its own housekeeper who lives close by. It is ideally suited to extended groups of friends and family coming together. For those really wanting to mark an occasion, there is the option of having a Chef cook for the group throughout your stay or for a special evening of fine dining.
Set within beautiful garden of up to 5 acres, the Hall overlooks the magnificent Shuttlingsloe Hill and surrounding farmland.
Charmingly decorated to a very high standard, you will find a delightful drawing room and study with open fires, which you can relax beside. There are also two further sitting rooms and staff accommodation. As well as a country style kitchen there is a beautiful dining room that can seat up to 20 people making it the perfect family get together.
In addition, there is an impressive billiard room where hours of fun can be had with all members of the family, young and old.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
There are 12 individually designed bedrooms, two with en-suites, along with 6 further bathrooms, accessed via a stunning central circular staircase.
The bedrooms have been individually designed using only the best quality fabrics and furniture giving a warm and homely feel to the property.
There is a small, unfenced stream running through the bottom of the garden 50 yards from the house, children should be supervised in this area.
Crag Hall employs a gardener who may be tending the grounds during your stay. A daily housekeeper is included within the price of your stay. Services provided include making beds, washing towels and sheets and cleaning bathrooms.
The Cotswolds is an area blessed with a huge range of accommodation options and there are a good number of excellent hotels within easy reach of the Colesbourne shoot.
The Village Inn at Colesbourne has nine rooms and is in the perfect location in the heart of the Estate, and the luxurious Cowley Manor Hotel is only a few minutes down the road. The Wheatsheaf Inn in Northleach and the Greenway Hotel at Shurdington are also under 20 minutes’ drive away.
